I just watched an old episode of American Experience in my Pop Culture class this evening on the history of Coney Island. It was definitely an interesting episode, maybe more for me, a person that has spent many a summer weekend at the slummiest-of-American-slums, the boardwalk of Coney.

Eating corn on the cob and drinking beer from a paper can while you watch the (garbage-filled) waves crash against the shore with the sound of the Cyclone screaming in the background, is one of the best things about the New York City summer. The whole thing got me rather sad, as they displayed the various incarnations of Coney Island since the turn of the century, each one more elaborate than the previous and each one subsequently burned down. What made me sadder was that I was not around to see this last and final version of Coney, the one that I knew and loved, dissipate.

All of the things that I love about Coney Island, the most was this commercial that came out when they were trying to rebrand Coney in the mid 1980s. I swear this commercial ran throughout every summer of my childhood and I will never forget the jingle.

“Remember Coney Island, and how it used to be? Now it’s everything you ever loved and more!”

I scoured the internet for it – if you can find it, five bucks goes to you!
