November 2008

I am so excited for the next four years! Unless they start to suck by mid-next year.

I actually said to Rob this morning, Wow it’s so sad that Tupak isn’t around to see this, huh?” And Rob replied, all knowingly, “But he is.. ”

This song has been in my head for 24 hours now.

So who ever said that no good bands come through Houston (actually that was me on at least 40 occasions) was totally wrong!

Last Friday was saw Ben Folds over at the Warehouse. It was …ok. He was totally awesome and I am nutty about the new album, but man was it packed! I have not seen so many white people in their upper 20′s gathered in one place in Houston since there was that 8 dollar wine sale at Whole Foods. It almost made me want to bust some caps, but then Ben played my new favorite song, so I got over it. I will probably never go back to the Warehouse, though. (but I’m sure I will)

Sunday night, our friend Al and the band he’s currently touring with Black Gold happened to be making a stop off in Houston. It was great to see him and we were lucky enough to share a drink with him on the day after his 30th birthday!! And we were further lucky that they were on tour with Jaguar Love – the new band from the singer that I always thought was a girl from the Blood Brothers. Holy crap, they rocked!!! He’s got this Jagger swagger, it’s almost too Jagger, but it’s not quite because he’s so blond. If you can; see them.

Just when we thought we were too old to do anything else for the rest of the month but watch our back-logged Tivo’d episodes of Sons of Anarchy, Rob and I forced our old feeble bodies to the newly created Houston House of Blues for TV On the Radio. House of Blues just opened a few weeks ago and it’s certainly a very lovely place. It was not too crowded, but just crowded enough. The Dirt Bombs opened up and I swear I have been meaning to see them for two years now. They totally rocked.

But TV On the Radio…. they were so good it was silly. It probably helps that their new album is, in my opinion, the best album to  come out this year. Oh man, they were just fantastic, I almost cried…as usual. They did though, have a very pointless white girl, with a pointless hipster.white.girl.comb.over, join them on stage to hum few songs along with them. I assume one or more than one of them are banging her. Other than her AND the fact that beers were SEVEN DOLLARS!! (umm… this is why we left New York BTW) TV On the Radio is one of the most phenomenal live bands I have seen to date.

So that was me ‘n Rob’s Houstonian CMJ week-ish. Sure, it wasn’t filled with VIP Badge holding douch-nozzels, or over priced tickets, or standing on long lines to get into clubs where you can’t see anything… but ya know, it wasn’t that bad. (OH, who am I kidding?! I wished we were home for CMJ)
